![]() I've done some research/searches and have found newer HID H11 conversion kits with CANBUS built into the harness, and then the ballast can be driven from the OEM headlight wiring since they drove the 55W halogens which drew some 4+amps each! So an easier plug and play kit is available to use to get true HID quality/power/road visibility with the least amount of fuss/work. ![]() When you see the photos, you'll think it's a REDNECK job, and for the most part it IS, was being done as a proof of concept. SO I took one of the LED bulbs, plugged it into the LEFT Canbus harness socket plug, put a cover over it and ziptied it to the frame as well, and then the DRL's worked. I plugged the right socket into the HID harness, and they worked, I kept the Canbus harnesses, but the DRL's didn't work because there wasn't enough Load on the headlight plug. Used the fuseblock frame mounting bolt/nut for the right ballast ground, a frame connection on the left ballast side, and some zip ties to secure the ballasts in place. I was able to figure out how to use one of the extra 12+V connections UNDER the jump start/main battery cable connector cover. This set/kit/harness requires wiring to the battery and using a relay controlled by the headlight socket/plug to trigger it. I had a leftover set of 55W ballasts/harness from my previous SUV conversion that I could use. SO then I decided to see if I could find an HID bulb that would fit the H11 socket. This way I could mount the LED's without hacking into the actual grill/bumper assembly. I used some 1/4" thick 2.5" wide aluminum bar stock that I bent into an "L" and cut to fit behind the front bottom spoiler. I used the Canbus adapter harness to splice into for the extra wiring/power for the AUX LED lights. ![]() I had experience with the small 6-LED bar lights I had put on my 81XS1100 motorcycle a year or so ago, and thought they might help at least light up the road close to me so that I could see the curbs/corners at night. I was also disappointed in that the DRL's would go dim with the headlights on, so they also didn't provide any usable see the road lighting. ![]() Tried 2 other sets of LED's, the latest was with the latest newest Cree CSP Hi Power LED type chips but they still didn't show the road much better than the halogens. SO, I first tried some LED bulbs, got a CANBUS adapter harness as well, but they weren't much better than the halogens. Then I found some replacement housings and the newer generation LED bulbs, and WOW what a difference. I have another older SUV '04 Xterra that I had first fitted with some smaller HID projectors INSIDE The stock/OEM headlight housings and they did OK. At night I would have a new SUV pull up behind me and my car would cast a shadow in front of me where the SUV was lighting up the road better than my Halogens could. I discovered to my dismay that Chevy had gone real cheap on their low priced models and had pathetic Halogen bulbs in their HID projector housings. ONLY after buying it, driving it at night did I realize that it DIDN'T! One of the things I thought I liked about it was that it had the HID projectors, so I thought it had HID powered lights. I lived in made me get it towed away! :( 20 + years later and wife said I could get a new car, but still on somewhat of a budget, so found a 2017 50th anniversary HyperBlue LS V-6 and got it. I used to have a late 60's Pontiac Firebird, was actually my first car in the late 70's, rebuilt the 350 V8 with modest cam, Holley, etc., but then fell on hard financial times in the early 90's, broke down badly and couldn't afford to fix/register/insure, and frickin' P.U.D. I'm new here, but not to FORUMS in general.
